Schioppettino is a historic red grape variety from Friuli in northeastern Italy, particularly thriving in the Colli Orientali area. Its name means "the little explosion," referring to the grape’s natural crispness and lively acidity, which make it unique in the region’s wine production.
In the glass, schioppettino produces a medium to full-bodied wine with a distinctive aromatic profile of black cherries, blackcurrants, and violets. What truly sets it apart from other Italian varieties is its spicy character—often featuring pronounced notes of black pepper, clove, and a subtle herbal freshness reminiscent of syrah.
The grape is typically grown on Friuli’s characteristic “Ponca” soils, a mix of marl and sandstone, contributing to its minerality and finesse. Traditionally, schioppettino has been challenging to cultivate due to its thick skin and late ripening, but modern winemaking techniques have allowed for the production of elegant, well-structured wines with aging potential.
Schioppettino pairs beautifully with dishes that have a spicy touch—try it with lamb, mushroom risotto, or medium-aged cheeses, where its fresh acidity and spicy character can complement the flavors perfectly. A grape that deserves more attention and proves that Friuli is capable of much more than just white wines.
