Sagrantino is a hardy grape variety that thrives in calcareous soils and can withstand a certain amount of drought. In Umbria, the grape is typically grown in high mountain areas, which produces wines with good acidity and minerality.
Sagrantino wines are often dense and powerful, but at the same time elegant and balanced, which makes them suitable to accompany dark and robust meat dishes, such as lamb and game. The grape is also used in the production of a few DOCG areas in Umbria, including Montefalco Sagrantino and Torgiano Rosso Riserva, where it is one of the main grape varieties.
