Collection: Cascina Roccalini
The old vineyard stands by itself in the small village of Roccalini, north of Alba and near the eastern bank of the Tanaro River. The farm is beautifully located in the calcareous hills with a fantastic view over Barbaresco and the 20 hectares of land. The farm has history dating back to Napoleonic times and has its own small chapel. Here we meet Paolo Veglio and his mother Luciana. Paolo is a fabulous oenologist and with his wine project Cascina Roccalini he is the first in his family to make wine production his profession. Before Paulo took over the vineyard, the family sold the grapes to, among others, Bruno Giacosa. In 2005, the first wine bearing the Cascina Roccalini name was presented. Paolo's mother is a persistent helper and is fantastic at spoiling the guests of the farm with delicious snacks to go with the wonderful wines.!
Paolo grew up in the countryside and only wanted to make wine. He graduated from the University of Oenology in 1998. In 2003, he began to work seriously on the family's vines, and already in 2005 the first vintage could be presented with the help of Dante Scaglione, (who was Bruno Giacosa's oenologist for years).
Paolo goes on his own behalf. His philosophy is not based on large dividends and high earnings. He practices relaxed artisanal winemaking according to old Piedmont traditions. Out of the 20 hectares of land, only approx. 4.7 hectares cultivated with wine. The rest is forest, fruit and nut trees. In doing so, he ensures a balanced and harmonious ecosystem, and it gives health and vitality to the soil and the vines. The grapes are grown organically and in order to preserve the biodiversity of the site, work is done manually and without the use of herbicides or synthetic products of any kind, all with a special focus on the quality of the grapes and to preserve the area and its characteristics. Fermentation of the wines takes place with their wild yeast and they are slowly matured in large oak barrels. The wines are bottled without filtration or clarification processes and with very low doses of sulphur. The result is healthy, territorial, pure and elegant wines of great drinkability and quality, the result of a genuine and traditional approach.
