Collection: Domaine Hoffmann-Jayer
Formerly known as Domaine Jayer-Gilles, Domaine Hoffmann-Jayer was originally founded in the 1950s by Robert Jayer and his wife Paulette. The winery is located in the old Gilles buildings in the village of Magny-lès-Villers, in the hills just southwest of Nuits-Saint-Georges.
Robert and Paulette's son, Gilles Jayer, born in 1961, started working in the family business in 1991 and took over from his parents in 1998.
The style of Jayer-Gilles has always been quite unique, although some may have found it somewhat old-fashioned. This also meant that the demand for the wines has been decreasing over the years, although we have always been enthusiastic about the special style.
In 2017, Gilles decided to sell the property to André Hoffmann, as he had no descendants able or willing to take it over.
André Hoffmann is Swiss and comes from a background in the pharmaceutical industry, and is also a keen wine enthusiast. He now runs the domaine with some good people, including the winemaker Alexandre Vernet, who can be seen in the picture above.
The domaine is now in the process of converting from Gilles Jayer's robust style to a more modern and balanced style. This means that they have started to limit the impression of oak and reduce the use of oak altogether.
Domaine Hoffmann-Jayer is undergoing rapid development in these years, and it is a development that will be interesting to follow. The quality of the vineyards and harvested grapes is extremely high and the new style is certainly interesting compared to the old and many will certainly find it more accessible.
