Ferrero is a small but passionate winery located in Pascena, midway between Sant'Angelo in Colle and Sant'Angelo Scalo on the southern side of Montalcino. The winery was born out of a shared love of wine and winemaking that Claudia and Pablo shared when they established the property in the late 1990s. Their commitment to the world of wine has also rubbed off on their three daughters, Silvia, Giulia and Pepita, who now all contribute actively to the family project. Giulia is a trained oenologist and also has the responsibility as leading Winemaker at Mastrojanni.
Ferrero extends over 5.5 hectares of vineyards, located at an altitude of between 220 and 300 meters above sea level. This location provides perfect conditions for growing the grapes, especially Sangiovese, which is grown on three hectares below Sant'Angelo in Colle. Both their Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino wines are produced from here. Both with a really nice depth and complexity.
In addition to sangiovese, Ferrero also has fields in Montenero d'Orcia where they grow the grapes for their "Pepita" IGT. This wine is an exciting blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, alicante and montepulciano, all of which contribute their unique characters to the final wine.
The terroir is chalky and mainly clay, which is ideal for wine production as it forces the vines to extend their roots deep into the soil to find nourishment. This process, along with careful organic fertilization and care, ensures grapes of the highest quality.
All work in the vineyard is done manually, which allows for gentle treatment of the vines and a precise adaptation to the special conditions of the individual vintage.
The production of the wines takes place in their carefully renovated cellar, which was formerly a stable and barn from the early 1900s. Here, the focus is on preserving the fruit and aromas from each grape variety, and respect for the grapes and their natural character is evident in each and every bottle.
For aging, Ferrero uses large French oak barrels for Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino, while their IGT wines are stored in tonneaux and barriques. This aging process is designed to highlight the natural identity of the wine without overpowering them with too much oak.
